Auditions for the Spring/Summer Season, Tues., February 6

Contact to let us know if you’re interested in attending our next round of open audition rehearsal at First Church Boston, 66 Marlborough Street, Boston.

Voices Rising is an auditioned community chorus. Our members are not professional vocalists and are not required to read music. To join our group, it is also not necessary to have prior singing experience. We strive for our audition process to be gentle, welcoming, and supportive.

On Tuesday, February 6, applicants will audition with the Artistic Director and a select group of Voices Rising members before being admitted as a singing member. After the audition, the accepted (or provisionally accepted) singer will sit in on rehearsal on Tuesday, February 13 to meet the membership and get a sense of the atmosphere and the music for the season. Please plan to be available for both dates.

The audition itself includes both written and vocal exercises. The goal is to ascertain the applicant’s theoretical knowledge of music rudiments and notational symbols, etc., and to determine the applicant’s vocal range and timbre, ability to stay in pitch, and pitch memory. It is not necessary to come with a prepared piece to sing.

There are three possible outcomes:

  • Pass – applicant is invited to be a singing member of Voices Rising
  • Provisional Pass – applicant is invited to sing with Voices Rising for a few weeks after which time another session will be scheduled to assess her progress and ensure her ability to keep up with the group.
  • Defer – applicant is not given singing member status, but is given feedback on her audition with the opportunity to try again in future seasons, and the invitation to stay part of the community through other non-singing and/or volunteer activities.

Voices Rising rehearses every Tuesday night, from 6:30-9:30 PM at First Church Boston. Limited metered parking is available after 6:00 P.M. The Boston Common garage is located nearby as well. If you take the T, the Green Line Copley T stop at Boylston and Dartmouth Streets is a 5-minute walk from the Church. From the T stop, walk on Dartmouth Street three blocks toward the Charles River (away from Copley Square and the Public Library), turn right onto Marlborough Street and continue for two blocks. The Church will be on your right.
